“Becoming yourself isn’t something that happens once.”

I’m Keley Johnson — author, poet, creator, mother, breast cancer survivor, U.S. Army veteran, and the woman behind Practical Magick.

I was born in California and made Houston home more than a decade ago. I’ve lived enough life to know that becoming yourself isn’t something that happens once. We are constantly healing, changing, beginning again, letting go, and finding our way back to the parts of ourselves we may have forgotten along the way.

That understanding is at the heart of Practical Magick. I create guided journals, affirmations, poetry, and thoughtful tools that invite us to slow down, tell ourselves the truth, explore what we’re carrying, and become more intentional about the lives we create from here.

Writing has always been one of the ways I make sense of life. I write poetry, journal, read everything that makes me think and feel, and believe deeply in the power of words to help us name things we once couldn’t explain. My work often explores self-love, relationships, healing, sensuality, gratitude, aging, starting over, and the beautiful freedom that comes with knowing yourself more deeply.

Words help us name the things we once couldn’t explain.

Away from the page, I’m happiest gardening, reading, writing poetry, creating something new, or spending time with the people I love — especially my dog, Scottie, who is usually somewhere nearby reminding me that a good walk, a little sunshine, and being completely present can fix quite a lot.

My newest creative challenge is Compass, an app I’m developing to help us find our bearings when life feels noisy, scattered, or overwhelming. It’s another expression of the same idea behind Practical Magick: that clarity, intention, reflection, and a few simple tools can help us come back to ourselves and move forward with more purpose.

Practical Magick is an extension of the way I try to live: with curiosity, intention, honesty, beauty, and a little bit of magick.

I’m glad you found your way here.
